Over the past few seasons, Skye Chamber Music's membership has fluctuated between about 35 and 65 people holding Season Tickets. Those paying at the door usually boost audiences to somewhere between about 40 and 70.

Where we meet

The Fingal Centre, which accommodates our piano, has a stage and a large, raked auditorium seating about 250.

The capacity of St Columba's is more modest but there will be plenty of room for you; it has remarkably good acoustics, the seats are comfortable -- we don't have to endure listening in pews! -- the church is heated, and we have made it easy to sample the concerts and painless to join.

St Columba's Episcopal Church is in Park Road, Portree, about 100m north of the north corner of Somerled Square. The grid reference is NG482437 (or set your satnav for IV51 9EH). It was designed by Alexander Ross in 1884. The three-light west window, by E I Ingram, is a memorial to Flora MacDonald, who helped Prince Charles Edward Stuart escape after the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

How to join

Last year, we had to raise Season Ticket prices for the first time in many years but 40 for adults still entitles you to admission to all seven concerts, although full-time students are admitted without charge. A more welcome innovation was that season ticket holders are each entitled to bring a guest free to one concert. That means, of course, that you needn't miss an event when you have visitors, just so long as they're music-loving visitors. Those not yet sure they will be able to attend regularly, can buy tickets for each performance at the door for 10 per person. But, of course, the season ticket represents a substantial saving if you attend all seven events.

The only extras charges have been a requested donation (recommended 50p per person) from those partaking of tea or coffee and biscuits in the interval, or perhaps slighlty more for afternoon events where we try to provide something a little more substantial by way of home baking. At the informal evening -- usually jazz -- there is the option of a buffet supper (usually costing under 20 per head) before the performance. Programmes for each concert are also provided free of charge.
